There are many legal considerations to take into account when creating a media project. Copyright, music rights, location clearances, trademark infringements — all factor in to our time, budgets — and headaches. Hear from area experts for a discussion of best practices in copyright and legal protections for filmmakers. Best practices, fair use, public domain and use of Creative Commons are among the topics to be discussed.

Speakers:Peter LaMottePresident, GeniusRocket
Peter LaMotte is President of GeniusRocket overseeing all functions of the company. He came to GeniusRocket from Corporate Executive Board where he was a Marketing Consultant and Executive Educator for the Marketing Leadership Council and Customer Contact Council. He has worked in the sales and marketing divisions of IBM, Apple, and Intrepid Aviation, an aircraft leasing company. Peter's career has often been focused on the leading edge of internet technology. While at IBM, Peter was one of the original NetGen account executives, IBM's first industry vertical focused on internet-based companies. He holds a B.A. in International Business from Rhodes College and a Masters in Business Administration from Vanderbilt University.
Peter has taught classes and seminars on innovation, crowdsourcing, social media, and advertising trends at Georgetown University, George Mason University, and University of Maryland's Smith School of Business. He was voted as one of Washington DC's Tech Titans by Washingtonian Magazine in 2011.

Kimberly P. Nguyen
Litigation Associate, Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP

Kimberly P. Nguyen is a litigation associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP where she concentrates her practice in intellectual property counseling, analysis and litigation for entertainment and new media companies. She has assisted clients with a variety of copyright, trademark, fair use, and other civil matters, including drafting DMCA takedown notices, co-production and writers agreements (both WGA and non-union), terms of service and privacy policies for websites, and location and appearance releases. A former law clerk for the World Wildlife Fund and Consumer Privacy Counsel for the Electronic Privacy Information Center, Ms. Nguyen obtained her J.D., cum laude, in 2009 from the American University Washington College of Law, and writes frequently on intellectual property issues.
